6 Benefits of Exercise for Seniors & Aging Adults
Regular physical activity and exercise not only help improve mental and physical health but also helps older adults maintain independence. Here are 6 benefits of exercise:
- Prevents Disease – Helps prevent common diseases like heart disease and diabetes by improving overall immune systems. This is important for seniors as their immune systems are often compromised. Light exercise like walking can be a powerful tool for disease management. Physical Activity can also help reduce blood pressure in some people with hypertension.
- Improves Mental Health – Mental Health benefits of exercise are a good mood booster. Exercise produces endorphins, aka the “feel-good hormone”, which acts as a stress reliever and leaves you feeling happy or satisfied.
- Helps with anxiety and depression
- Improves sleep
- Increases energy
- Improves self-confidence and physical abilities
- Decreases Risk & Falls – Improves strength and flexibility, which helps improve balance and coordination.
- Improves Social Engagement
- Improves Cognitive Function – Studies suggest a lower risk of dementia with physically active adults.
- Physiological Benefits – Benefits every aspect of your body from your bones to your muscles to your organs. Regular exercise strengthens your muscles and your bones which brings relief from common aches and pains, like lower back pain and arthritis, as well as fighting osteoporosis and muscle loss.
